About Legacy Construction
Every house we build should still be standing in 2150.
An owner-led Portland builder that runs a custom home the way a commercial project is run: plans first, price second, and the owner on site every week.

- Founded in 2021
- 4-6 active builds at a time
- Written 5-year workmanship warranty
Everything worth knowing about Legacy Construction comes back to Joe Hausler, who reviews every phase of every house we build. We build custom homes, additions and garages across Portland and Southern Maine, four to six at a time.
Here is who builds your house, and how we run the job.
Joe's public professional profile lists California State University, Chico in its education section, alongside his construction and real estate work in Portland.
We settle the drawings, scope and fixed price before construction. Maine's home construction contract guidance explains why the written agreement matters when you choose a builder.
Why did Joe start Legacy Construction?
On January 1, 2021, Joe moved back to Maine to start the company he had been planning for years. He wanted every house built to stand for generations, not just long enough to clear a one-year warranty inspection.
Joe Hausler started on job sites at eight years old, working summers beside his father. He left for college to study construction management and earned his degree.
He spent the next 15 years in commercial construction, working up from assistant project manager to overseeing developments as large as $300 million. Office towers, mixed-use buildings and institutional work taught him what happens when one mistake costs millions.
Joe also earned a Maine real estate license, so he can help clients find land and judge a lot before they commit to it. Ledge, poor soils or no room for a septic system can add tens of thousands of dollars before a foundation is poured.
Legacy Construction keeps a short project list on purpose: four to six active builds at a time. That limit is what lets Joe be on every site several times a week and review each phase himself.
Maine does not license general contractors, so there is no builder's license number to show you. What we put in writing instead is a fixed price, a 5-year workmanship warranty and $2,000,000 in general liability coverage.

How Legacy Construction runs your project
Detailed plans, then a fixed price
Every home starts with four to six weeks of planning and design, and full plans exist before ground breaks. The contract price is fixed, and changes are rare because we solve problems on paper, not mid-construction.
Commercial-grade project management
Joe runs your house with the scheduling, cost control and quality checks he used on commercial projects. You get a detailed schedule up front and a written progress update every week.
A 5-year workmanship warranty
Five years, in writing, where most builders offer one. If our workmanship falls short in that time, we come back and make it right.
